Sex Addiction Symptoms

Sex addiction is a real condition that can cause serious consequences for someone’s personal and professional life. It’s important to recognize the signs of sex addiction, and to know that help is available for those suffering from compulsive sexual behavior.

The most prominent sex addiction symptoms include spending a significant amount of time engaging in sexual activities, particularly with a partner or on their own. The individual may also watch pornography or engage in sexual fantasies on a regular basis. They may spend a lot of money on sex-related items, such as sex toys or lingerie. They may also engage in cyber sex, phone sex or other types of electronic sex. They often engage in trade-offs, such as neglecting their children or putting off work obligations in order to satisfy their sexual urges.

Another common sex addiction symptom is lying about sex-related activities. This reflects the fact that the person knows that what they are doing is wrong and harmful, but they cannot control their impulses. They also know that they may be exposing themselves to infections and diseases like HIV, chlamydia or gonorrhea.

Behavioral therapy is the main treatment option for people suffering from sex addiction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic psychotherapy are the two most popular approaches. Medications are also used, but are less common. They are most commonly prescribed by a psychiatrist and include antipsychotics or medications that reduce sexual desire, arousal and orgasm, such as methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine. Support groups are also available and can be beneficial to those who have a sex addiction.
